Xylem’s YSI® brand ensures water quality and safety in waterways worldwide

June 29, 2012

SINGAPORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jun. 29, 2012-- With equipment providing precise measurements in reservoirs, rivers and harbors, Xylem will showcase its analytics offering, along with the rest of Xylem’s water applications expertise, at Singapore International Water Week 2012 July 1-5, 2012 at the Sands Expo and Convention Center, Marina Bay Sands.

Xylem’s YSI brand, a global leader in water quality monitoring and testing, has provided water quality sensors worldwide to perform accurate and reliable water quality measurements that ensure the safety and well-being of waterways. YSI water quality sensors, which measure dissolved oxygen, turbidity, chlorophyll, pH, conductivity, and other parameters, are used in lakes and reservoirs to monitor water quality before the water enters a treatment plant for processing. These water quality sensors are also used to ensure the health and safety of water in rivers and harbors.

Typically, sample test locations are identified across lakes or reservoirs based on a number of factors, including weather and currents. This process is time-consuming and labor-intensive.

The YSI EcoMapper AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) provides an effective and efficient solution for contained bodies of water or near-shore applications. The self-propelled submarine-like unit contains water quality sensors and can "swim" around a reservoir to test and collect water quality data automatically. The deployment route is defined in advance using the Mission Planning software and GPS technology. The EcoMapper is then deployed to complete the mission. Customers who have bought the Ecomapper include PUB, Singapore’s national water agency.

The data is collected and automatically stored providing a complete water quality profile, which cannot be done by manual spot-sampling. The EcoMapper also includes a side sonar feature where sonar technology is used to create a complete image of the sea or lake floor. This information is critical when monitoring erosion and environmental effects over longer periods of time.

YSI also offers a variety of continuous, real-time monitoring options to deploy their water quality sensors on monitoring buoys. The buoy from which the sensors are suspended provides a floating platform that is anchored in a waterway, lake or reservoir to monitor physical, chemical and biological parameters in real time. Trends in this data reflect physical environmental effects on water resources in order to predict conditions that harvest damaging algae blooms. Also, treatment decisions and forecasts can be made that ultimately save time, energy and maintenance costs throughout the treatment process.
